What is the Investor Occupation Permit?

The Investor Occupation Permit is a combined work and residence permit that lets a foreign national invest in, own and run a business in Mauritius while legally living in the country. Under the Immigration Act 2022, an investor is a non-citizen — or a company controlled by non-citizens — registered with the Economic Development Board (EDB). It is part of the wider occupation permit services we provide.

The investor permit is issued for up to 10 years and is renewable, and after five qualifying years it opens a pathway to a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit. Where the investor is a company, a separate application is made for each shareholder who is also a director. Getting your category, business plan and turnover projections right from the start is what makes the difference — and that is exactly what we manage for you.

Three ways to qualify as an investor

The EDB offers three routes to an Investor Occupation Permit. We assess which fits your capital, sector and business model — then build the application around it.

Option 1
USD 50,000

Standard investor route

  • Transfer USD 50,000 into a Mauritius bank account within 60 days of issue
  • Certified bank statement showing proof of funds
  • Turnover of MUR 1.5M from year 1, building to MUR 20M cumulative by year 5
  • Renewal: minimum MUR 5M annual turnover from year 6
Option 2
USD 100,000

Higher-investment route

  • Transfer USD 100,000 into a Mauritius bank account within 60 days
  • Certified bank statement showing proof of funds
  • Turnover of MUR 1M from year 1, building to MUR 15M cumulative by year 5
  • Renewal: minimum MUR 5M annual turnover from year 6
Option 3
Innovative start-ups

No minimum investment

  • Submit an innovative project to the EDB, or
  • Register with an incubator accredited by the Mauritius Research & Innovation Council
  • Ideal for technology and R&D-driven ventures
  • Renewal criteria set by the EDB Chief Executive Officer
Good to know: every investor application needs a detailed business plan, and the permit fee is USD 1,000 plus a non-refundable USD 50 application fee. Where your company has several shareholder-directors, each one files a separate investor application. Not sure which option fits? Ask us →

Investor occupation permit Mauritius — FAQ

What is the minimum investment for an investor occupation permit in Mauritius?
The standard route (Option 1) requires USD 50,000 transferred into a Mauritius bank account within 60 days of your permit being issued. Option 2 requires USD 100,000, and the innovative start-up route (Option 3) has no minimum investment. Ask us which fits your plans.
What turnover does an investor permit require?
On the USD 50,000 route, your company needs a minimum turnover of MUR 1.5 million from year 1, growing to a cumulative MUR 20 million by year 5. Renewal from year 6 requires at least MUR 5 million in annual turnover. We build your business plan and projections to meet these targets.
How long is the investor occupation permit valid?
It is issued for up to 10 years and is renewable, subject to meeting the turnover criteria. After five qualifying years you may also apply for a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit.
Do you also register my company in Mauritius?
Yes. Company incorporation — BRN and CBRD registration with the right shareholder/director structure — is part of our investor permit service, since the permit is tied to your business.
Can I apply as a company with several shareholders?
Yes. Where the investor is a company, a separate occupation permit application is made for each shareholder who is also a director, with the criteria applied to each applicant.
Can my family move to Mauritius with me?
Yes. Your spouse, dependent children (up to 24) and dependent parents can apply as dependents alongside your investor permit. Contact us to include them.
